Three people were sent to hospital and several evacuated after a fire in the basement of Eger shopping centre in the capital’s Akersgata earlier today.

Police say the flames started in a transformer room, causing smoke to spread to all floors of the building, located near main street Karl Johan, which was evacuated quickly.

The three were taken to hospital by ambulance after being exposed to smoke. The medical personnel called to the scene also examined three security guards on the spot.

Emergency phone centre operator Bjørnar Aronsen told Aftenposten, “There is an external grill on the transformer. Currently, it is uncertain what caused the fire to start, but it may have been as simple as a cigarette butt being thrown in.”
