62-year-old Vidar Vestli is able to leave hospital and travel home in time for Christmas after five months of recovery.

He was only about 30 metres from the bomb when it exploded. Severely injured, it was uncertain whether he would survive.

“Several of the injuries could have had a tragic outcome. He had to have his leg amputated in the end,” his wife, Sissel, told Dagbladet.

Mr Vestli was on his way to collect his wife, who was physically unharmed, from work at the Ministry of Justice at the time.

She added, “Circumstances were on our side. It was incredibly lucky that it was a trained police officer with aid equipment in his car who got to Vidar first.”

The couple also met with King Harald and Queen Sonja as they visited the victims of the terror attacks admitted to the hospital in Sunnaas.

“It was a warm and friendly encounter. It’s clear TRH are people who care about others,” Mr and Mrs Vestli said.
