Norway authority to combat refugee harassment
Published on Wednesday, 14th September, 2011 at 21:14 under the news in brief category, by Nicoleta Dumitrache Sincan.
NEWS IN BRIEF: The Norwegian Immigration Directorate (UDI) has decided to make information films about freedom of religion to avoid harassment and discrimination of asylum seekers.
Immigration authorities made the move after an Afghan was seriously injured in an incident when a fellow refugee threw boiling water at him following his decision to convert to Christianity.
The individual was taken to hospital suffering from severe burns, with a further four Afghan converts subsequently fleeing from the Hå asylum seeker reception centre in Nærbø for fears of their own safety.
Whilst these types of films were originally designed to inform homosexuals of their rights, the UDI found it appropriate to extend the offer to those who practice a different religion.
“Different cultures have different principles, and it can be that more understanding for that needs to be created,” said Anne Siri Rustad to Vårt Land.
The UDI plans to implement the new anti-discrimination measures starting next year.
