Mr Øygard, who was Mayor of Vågå when reports surfaced and was on sickleave, denies the abuse. It allegedly took place between 2009 and 2011, when the girl was 13 to 15-years old.
Police have made a full investigation and have now sent recommendations to prosecutors. Mr, Øygard’s defence lawyer Mette Yvonne Larsen told NRK, “My client believes that this is wrong and that it cannot be proved.”
“In view of the police handling of the case, he thought that this [his alleged guilt] was probably the perception but he is confident that the prosecutor will look differently upon it”.
