A fairly senior Norwegian police officer found himself slightly stumped by a piece of German automotive engineering.

King Harald and Queen Sonja were due to open an art exhibition in Bergen when their driver encountered problems getting the car to move off.

Police Inspector OlavValland had taken the task of driving the royal couple due to the police strike, but ended up having a minor altercation with the vehicle when he failed to get it into gear.

After a short while, King Harald put an end to his confusion and assisted the hapless driver, arriving five minutes late at the venue, reported Bergens Tidende, Thursday.

“It was in fact a Mercedes with automatic transmission. I could not get the car to go forward, and before I had thought about it the King told me that I had to have my foot on the brake to get the car in gear,” said Police Inspector Valland.

It is unclear whether he had inspected the instruction manual.
