UPDATED: Prosecutors in UAE city Dubai pardon Marte Deborah Dalelv at a hearing and allow her to leave the country, Monday.
“I’m immensely pleased about being pardoned,” a very happy 24-year-old told NRK, “I don’t know [exactly] when I’ll be going back home, but it will be as soon as possible.”
She had received a 16-month prison sentence for extra marital sex and alcohol consumption after reporting to police she had been raped in March.
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide tweeted the news saying “Marte is released! Thanks to everyone who signed up to help #releasemarte.”
Ms Dalelv met with prosecutors in Dubai this morning. Norwegian Ambassador Åse Bjerke and representatives from the Norwegian’s Seamen’s Church accompanied her to the meeting.
On Sunday, she expressed her nervousness for the meeting and how worried she was that it would mean being taken to prison.
But this morning she was given the news that she was free to leave the country, Delelv told NRK,
The Release Marte Facebook page posted a message after the news was announced thanking people for their efforts in getting her freed adding “Let's make sure that this never happens again!!”
