Brightening Norway’s dark winter weather. BOOK REVIEW: ‘Make a wish’, I asked a four-year-old on New Year’s Eve. ‘Snow,’ she replied. All I could offer was a book after a snowless winter in the Oslo region at the time. But it was not an ordinary one Picture book ‘The Christmas Wish’ reached fifth place on The New York Times' bestseller list for children's publications. Per Breiehagen who emigrated to Minneapolis from eastern Norway’s Ål in Buskerud County, did the photographs. Breiehagen, a reputable photographer in the US, is married to Lori Evert who wrote the text. What makes this book remarkable is the fairytale-like photographs of their daughter in a snowy landscape. Romanticized, just like we love to see the spectacular nature.

The story is a Christmas adventure about Anja setting out to find Santa. With her braided blonde hair, she is wearing a red Santa hat Per Breiehagen and Lori Evert

and a sweater with traditional Norwegian patterns over her Sami reindeer shoes. It is a traditional tale, with the exquisite accompanying photographs, digitally enhanced to allow Anja to be in touch with a reindeer, a polar bear, and the spectacular Northern Lights.

This piece of art, which also topped Amazon.com’s sales list for European children's books, began as a four-year family project. It all started with a photograph of their daughter Anja and a reindeer sent out as a Christmas postcard. Photographer Per Breiehagen, who was worked for magazines such as National Geographic and New York Times Magazine, was obviously a perfect match for Lori Evert’s imagination.

‘The Christmas Wish’ is available in English from Amazon, and in Norwegian as ‘Juledrømmen’ from Juritzen Forlag.
