Winter holidays in Norway with a difference: Reindeer sledding. Cross-country skiing is one good way of travelling across winter landscapes inaccessible to road vehicles but is by no means the only choice. Sami have long-used the reindeerfor animal husbandry, transport, and food. At the same time, Norway offers some fairly unique experiences for visitors.

There are two main ways of going reindeer sledding. One involves sitting and admiring the scenery from beneath warm skins, the other being pulled behind on skis at a faster pace.

The main place to go is in Finnmark County, but it is available in other parts of Norway, such as Troms County’s Tromsø. Companies there organize this in connection with staying in a ‘Lavvo’ (traditional Sami tent, lávvu in Northern Sami) and Northern Lights experiences (a separate article on this is coming).
