Norway’s Ministry of Defence states that the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) contract could be worth more than NOK 10bn (some USD 1.19bn / EUR 1.12bn / GBP 953.26m) over time.

News of the deal comes following last week’s announcement that Norway and Germany will likely be purchasing new HDW-class 212A (212NG) submarines.

These will be made by German firm ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). Germany has also agreed to comprehensive cooperation regarding the NSM.

Kongsberg Defence Systems has said that both the Royal Norwegian Navy and the Polish Navy already use their missile.

In 2014, the US Navy successfully test-fired one from its USS Coronado off the coast of Southern California

Norway’s Ministry of Defence also hopes that Naval Strike Missile cooperation with Germany will lead to industrial cooperation in several other areas. This includes regarding a combat-management system.

“Germany is planning to acquire a significant number of missiles for its navy. This provides great opportunities for Norwegian industry, both for Kongsberg and for Norwegian subcontractors,” says Defence Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide in a statement.
