Norway notches up another record deportation year. Police forcibly deported over 8,000 immigrants without the legal right of abode in 2016, new figures show. Sylvi Listhaug, Immigration and Integration Minister for the Progress Party (FrP), says she is “very satisfied”. “It [the move] is about fighting crime and making the population [of Norway] safe,” she comments to NRK. “We’ll find those who are staying illegally in Norway and send them back to the country they belong to.”

Police forcibly deported over 8,000 immigrants without the legal right of abode in 2016, new figures show.

Sylvi Listhaug, Immigration and Integration Minister for the Progress Party (FrP), says she is “very satisfied”.

“It [the move] is about fighting crime and making the population [of Norway] safe,” she comments to NRK. “We’ll find those who are staying illegally in Norway and send them back to the country they belong to.”

Quoting Ministry of Justice and Public Security figures the Norwegian state broadcaster writes that 2016’s deportation numbers were 8,078.

This is a rise of 253 year-on-year, according to previously-published statistics by the Police Immigration Service (PU). New figures are due out.

Minister Listhaug’s aim for 2016 was 9,000.
