UN terror-listed Mullah Krekar claims he is considering taking up a political career when he returns to northern Iraq.

His lawyer, Brynjar Meling, is closely following the democratization process in northern Iraq.

“It is also important to see what political directions the Islamists are going to and if Mullah has a future as a parliamentarian”, he told NTB last week.

Truls Tønnesen, Iraq expert at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment said that, “there are still many unsolved problems in Iraq. It was very difficult to establish a government after the March 2010 elections. However, the cycle of violence was of the same magnitude as it used to be.”

The Mullah, ex-leader for the Islamist rebel group Ansar-al-Islam, has offered to leave Norway if authorities contribute towards his removal from the UN’s terror list. Politicians welcomed his decision to return voluntarily.

“If Mullah Krekar wishes to travel of his own free will, he can leave today; it would be welcomed. We won’t stop him for a second if he believes the security situation in northern Iraq is manageable,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

There are differing opinions of the Mullah.

Hans Geelmuyden, partner at PR Company Geelmuyden-Kiese, told Aftenposten he is critical to the Mullah’s behavior

“He has obvious qualities, both as a propagandist and entertainer.”

There are also no guarantees Mullah Krekar’s political aspirations will happen in the near future.

“We are giving 4-1 odds he won’t be leaving the country until 01st January 2012 because of having demanded something Norway cannot fulfill,” Thomas Aakvik, head of online gambling company Bettson Norway, tells The Foreigner.

Mullah Krekar has been on the UN terror list since December 2006.
