There’s been an explosion in the number of laying hens in Norway. According to figures from Statistics Norway (Statistisk Sentralbyrå), there’s been about a 20 percent rise in the last four years..

The increase of approximately 640,000 means Norwegian farmers now have just over four million laying hens in total.

But the huge growth in numbers means bad news for both chicken farmers and commerce. The possible 2,100 ton egg excess could lead to a collapse in the egg market.

To avoid this, the Norwegian Agriculture Authority’s (Statens landbruksforvaltning) advisory committee (omsetningsrådet) has decided all laying hens will now be slaughtered when they are 56 weeks old instead of the usual 76, reports Aftenposten.
