Airline hijacker motivated by rejection. It has been revealed the man who tried to highjack yesterday’s Turkish Airlines flight from Oslo to Istanbul had been battling with Norwegian immigration authorities. The man had lived in Voss in recent years and made several fruitless attempts to obtain a residence permit in Norway. “He has fought several battles, but been rejected every time,” claims a friend of the hijacker, who wished to remain nameless.

The man had lived in Voss in recent years and made several fruitless attempts to obtain a residence permit in Norway.

“He has fought several battles, but been rejected every time,” claims a friend of the hijacker, who wished to remain nameless.

Yesterday’s incident was also not the only time the man has employed dramatic methods, having gone on hunger strike for 43 days last summer, reports Avisa Hordaland.

The hijacker’s friend told the paper the man’s actions did not come as a shock.

“I’m not surprised he did it. When I talked to him yesterday, he told me that he was going to Oslo because he had something to arrange there. He also said that he was not sure if he would be able to come back to Voss for a while.”

Several passengers said that the man, who NRK reports has a health card showing he is mentally ill, threatened to blow up the plane whilst in the air between Gardermoen and Ataturk Airports unless it returned to Oslo.

He also tried to reach the cockpit for several minutes but was finally knocked down by 54-year-old Dag Gjerstad, a Norwegian passenger from Nord-Troms county who is being hailed as a hero.

“I got the impression my father was the only one who intervened and held him on the floor after we landed. My father is a man who takes responsibility,” she told VG.

During the incident, the crew told the passengers to keep calm, subsequently landing in Istanbul, where police stormed the plane and arrested the man. No passengers were hurt.
