Scandinavian blondes and sex have always been a topic of conversation in Britain. Yesterday’s article in Aftenposten – in a country that has more brunettes, rather than blondes – takes a look at what’s happening in Britain this time.

Double standards

Per Edgar Kokkvold (we’ll ignore the slightly unfortunate surname) is one of the Norwegians who knows Great Britain best, claims Aftenposten, having followed British sex scandals for many years.

“The British have a puritanical, bloodless image. Therefore, it always creates attention when British politicians’ slightly untidy sex lives are exposed,” he tells the paper, referring to the recent Mrs Peter Robinson affair.

Paul Robinson has had to step down temporarily as minister for Northern Ireland, after it was revealed that his wife – a Northern Ireland MP – is having an affair with a man 40 years her junior. In addition, she failed to declare having received £50,000 to set him up in business from two wealthy property developers.

Kokkvold goes on to say that the scope of scandals also tends to be extensive, because of what he alleges to be Britain’s double standards.

“The Victorian era was characterised by high morality, whilst debauchery percolated beneath the surface. We all have a picture of the boarding schools, where double standards of morality seethed and bubbled.”

“Unimpeachable”

And Kokkvold’s belief that political sex scandals often have undertones of corruption is supported by Agder University’s Jan Erik Mustad. He claims the British power elite view themselves as irreproachable, with the political environment appearing to be a state within a state.

“I’ve often visited both the House of Lords and the House of Commons myself. I can assure you that it’s an extremely peculiar environment,” he says, linking last year’s expenses scandal about rebates for MPs to the Robinson affair.

“When you manage money that isn’t your own and stray from established norms by being unfaithful too, it’s bound to create spectacular headlines,” says Mustad.
