Two trawlers from Scotland were seized by the Norwegian Coastguard on Tuesday morning for illegal fishing. On Wednesday, their captains were fined.

“They were arrested for having caught fish below the minimum permitted size” Preben Wallestad, Hordaland police district’s operations leader told the Bergens Tidende (bt.no) at the time.

The paper quotes the coastguard’s squadron commander as saying that both ships were towing a trawling net between them west of Sotra outside Bergen, in an area where there are large quantities of this size of fish.

Each captain was fined 30,000 kroner, and both shipping companies had to pay an extra fine of 120,000 each as a result of their loads being confiscated.

The ships were released from arrest at 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning.
