The funeral of the Norwegian reindeer owner killed in the recent helicopter accident took place amongst friends and family, Monday.

40-year-old Sven-Are Kappfjell and Swedish pilot Åke Petterson, 62, died after their helicopter crashed near Mosjøen, northern Norway, whilst assisting herding reindeer.

Police and Accident Investigation Board officials are still not sure precisely why the accident happened, but there were reports of bad weather at the time.

Conditions hampered rescue workers’ efforts and forced the helicopter ambulance to return its Brønnøysund base. Teams first reached the area at 19:00, one-and-three-quarter hours after police were told of the incident.

NRK reports Grane Municipality Mayor Bjørn Ivar Lamo, a close friend of the deceased Norwegian, told mourners gathered at the church funeral service, “he was warm, good-humoured, and a proud and loving father.”

“Sven-Are was an extremely skilled reindeer herder, who had extensive local knowledge and broad respect.”

The Sami flag was flown at half-mast.
