Critics hammer Branagh / News / The Foreigner

Critics hammer Branagh. Norwegian film critics have encouraged British Kenneth Branagh’s new film about Thor to leave Odin’s Åsgård. The Hollywood blockbuster, based more on Marvel’s Comics’ rendition rather than Norse mythology, reminds Stavanger Aftenblad’s Arild Abrahamsen of “a kitsch gold installation from the Baroque period”. “However, at least the main character [‘Thor’, played by Chris Hemsworth] looks like a lorry driver,” he continues, giving the film 4 out of 6.

Dagbladet’s Inger Merete Hobbelstad, calls the production’s design “terrible”, even though she also gave the film a four.

“One can just wonder what those old Vikings who imagined arriving at a warrior’s castle following their death, where the goats had mead in their udders, would have thought if they had entered Marvel’s and Kenneth Branagh’s Vallhalla, and discovered it was a gold-sprayed, sci-fi inspired Las Vegas hotel that [even] Donald Trump would have considered slightly vulgar.”

With a rating of three, Aftenposten’s Erlend Loe disagrees with some Twitterers' tweets, which describe the film as “awesome”, in a fornicating way.

“It is a visually attractive comic, with strong colours, enemies, bearded male gods with striking weapons, as well as a handful of slightly more reserved, but colourful women with breasts, something that applies to most of the women in Marvel’s universe [...]. I’m just mentioning this to underline that some creative men have understood what is needed to spice their work up so people get hooked.”

Mr Loe disliked the music, writing, “it is more irritating than useful, at times resembling that of a 30 year old advert for an airline.”

Meanwhile, back on the western coast with another three, Bergens Tidende’s Lars Holger Ursin found the film “boringly predictable, melodramatic, and unintentionally comic” where neither the script nor Mr Branagh were sufficient.

“[The technical postproduction in 3D makes Åsgård] become melodramatic and frivolous. You need to be a die-hard fan that has sent all of his/her critical antennae on a permanent package holiday not to think this gets to be a little embarrassing. Ironically enough, the divide between the human and godlike becomes too great.”

Moreover, whilst the reviews were not entirely scathing, even positive in parts, the headlines say it all:

“A tasteless Viking fantasy” – Stavanger Aftenblad
“Hammering away” – Dagbladet
“A stylish nonsense about Norse gods” – Aftenposten
“Collapsing stars in 3D” – Bergens Tidende

‘Thor’ premieres tomorrow, in 2D and 3D versions.
