Defense Minister hits back at Home Guard closure criticism. Minister of Defense Grete Faremo has alleged those fighting to save the HV016 Special Forces Unit from disbandment have tunnel vision. “The defense policy debate looks to be reduced to a mere battle for kroner once again, interspersed with some heated discussions about the organization of the Home Guard at troop level, as well as regarding which armored vehicles the military should choose”, she said in her annual speech Oslo Militære Samfund on Monday., firing a broadside at the strongest critics. The decision to disband the unit was taken last September, and there has been heavy flack from within HV016’s ranks since then, with allegations that the military consciously treats its personnel badly.

120 Home Guard soldiers have resigned since last year, and Major General Kristin Lund, Home Guard general inspector, is under investigation for allegedly revealing secret military information on an NRK programme last year.

“We can no longer stand and watch how the military leadership has treated its personnel in this matter”, former HV016 union representative Thomas Lund Nielsen told NRK on Monday.

HV016’s disbandment could now also mean Norway’s anti-terror capabilities are weakened. The unit also acted as support to the police and on other dangerous missions. Approximately 200 soldiers and 5 officers were stationed in 4 of Norway’s largest cities.

“It is a collective resignation. 94 percent of the force in Oslo, Stavanger, and Bergen has stepped down. We cannot be part of a system that does not take preparedness seriously in Norway,” says Mr Nielsen.

HV016’s disbandment is only part of a general trend, however. Since 1992, the number of soldiers has been reduced by more than 100,000, according to VG.

In her speech, Minister Faremo also warned she will make major cuts in the Air Force.

“Today’s structure is a product of history and is disproportionately expensive to run. It is natural that we look at this in a broader context and arrive at what is an appropriate base structure in connection with the phasing in of the new [F-35] combat aircraft”, she said.
