Anders Behring Breivik will be appearing in court personally, Monday, in what will be his first open remand hearing. The man behind the 22 July attacks is to account for why he killed 69 young political hopefuls on Utøya Island 8 government officials in the heart of Oslo in front of the judiciary and victims’ relatives.

Co-Counsel Tord Jordet says to VG that, “he [Breivik] wants to explain they were gruesome acts, which he had dreaded carrying out, but which he felt were necessary.”

“The Defendant says he is anxious about how it will be to meet the aggrieved and injured. This will be a completely new situation for him. He also says he is prepared that jeers will come from the courtroom and that some may try to attack him. He is ready for all scenarios.”

Oslo District Court originally ruled the 32-year-old’s hearing would take place via video link from his Ila Prison cell for reasons of safety and cost, and Borgarting Court of Appeal upheld the closed hearing decision. The Supreme Court overturned this just before the weekend.

Surviving family members have strongly censured the move, fearing this will just provide Breivik with the opportunity to spread his ideas and give him further attention.

“We know of his plans and ideas through what he has published himself. The open hearing can give him a speaker’s platform to present viewpoints that we will experience as a significant additional burden,” a father, who lost his son on Utøya, tells NTB.

Oslo District Court’s second case of the week involves three men indicted for terrorism conspiracy, 40-year-old Uighur (China) Mikael Davud, Iraqi-Kurd Shawan Sadek Saeed Bujak, 38, David Jakobsen, a 33-year-old and Uzbek.

The men, all with permanent Norwegian residence permits, are suspected of planning to assault Danish paper Jyllands-Posten with explosives, and shoot cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, author of the controversial Prophet Mohammed caricatures.

They are also believed to have links with al-Qaida, and were arrested last year on suspicion of attempting to attack the Chinese Embassy in Oslo.

The hearing begins on Tuesday, and is expected to take six weeks.
