Espen Barth Eide has condemned sentencing of a Norwegian woman after she told police she had been raped by a co-worker.

Marte Deborah Dalelv reported the matter to Dubai police in March. She was subsequently arrested and jailed for having sex outside marriage.

The Norwegian was also dismissed from her job at interior design company Al Mana Interiors, a franchisee in Swedish founder Thomas Lundgren’s retail company The One Total Home Experience, for alleged “improper behaviour” after reporting the incident.

Judges sentenced 24-year-old Ms Dalelv earlier this week to 16 months in prison for having extramarital sex, illegal consumption of alcohol, and perjury.

Her attacker was given 13 months after being found guilty of consuming alcohol and having sex outside marriage.

Norway Foreign Minister told state broadcaster NRK, Friday, “I have just spoken with the [UAE] Foreign Minister [Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan] and presented our view.”

“We believe it is a completely unacceptable verdict contrary to basic human rights and people's sense of justice.”

The issue has prompted many people on the Internet to respond in shock at Marte Deborah Dalelv’s fate. Many have called for people to boycott Dubai as a holiday destination.

Marte Deborah Dalelv has been staying at the Norwegian Seaman’s Church after her release from jail following Norwegian Consulate contact with authorities. Dubai officials confiscated her passport.

She is to appeal against her sentence. The hearing is scheduled for September.

Meanwhile, her former employer Al Mana Interiors has released a statement expressing sympathy with Ms Dalelv’s situation and explaining the circumstances of her dismissal. The firm is owned by billionaire Wissam Al Mana, pop star Janet Jackson’s husband.

“Company representatives have been supportive and in communication with Marte throughout her ordeal. Only when Ms Dalelv declined to have positive and constructive discussions about her employment status, and ceased communication with her employer, was the company forced to end our relationship with her,” says spokesperson Hani El Korek.

“The decision had nothing to do with the rape allegation, and unfortunately neither Ms. Dalelv nor her attorneys have chosen to contact the company to discuss her employment status.”

"We continue to be open to helping Ms. Dalelv and extending her resources during the Dubai legal process. We are hopeful that we can resume a positive discussion about the assistance she needs during this difficult time," Mr El Korek concludes.
