Masdar City is to be constructed in Abu Dhabi and will be world’s first carbon neutral city, housing an expected 90.000 people.

The city will be built in a vast desert area, having buildings that will provide shade at ground level.

“This provides a more comfortable and cooler outdoor environment to walk in, compared with other cities in the region,” Jürgen Happ, the architect of the Masdar City said.

ZERO Chairman Einar Håndlykken also mentioned the foundation has teamed up with Norsk Hydro in the hunt for a developer for what could Norway’s first energy-neutral commercial or office building with intelligent facade solutions.

Mr Håndlykken and Hyrdro’s President Svein Richard Brantzæg asked the 850 or so delegates “who wants and energy-neutral building?”

“Norway needs [this type of ] building, a building that everyone can be proud of, and show the way for everyone who wants to be part of voluntary climate work for a more energy efficient building ” said  ZERO’s chairman.
