Sven Göran Eriksson had nothing but good things to say about the team and Fabio Capello after the weekend’s match against Slovenia.

“England has everything; an extremely good team, and a very good manager,” he told the Swedish paper Aftonbladet.

Luck

Despite the team’s apparent penalty nightmare, which he didn’t want to talk about, he said that England’s chances next year are as good as any of the other national teams, because the differences between them are so small.

“As usual, you depend on your best players when you’re going to play in a championship…You also need luck when it comes to yellow cards and balls going in when they hit the post, rather than out.”

Crucial player

Eriksson thinks Wayne Rooney will be the most important for England should they succeed in the championship in South Africa.

“Rooney’s got his feet on the ground; he…works very hard. I never tried to calm him down. He’s a quiet guy, but could be hot-headed on the pitch. You can’t take his temper away from him, though, because it’s more positive than negative. He lives on it.”

A win at home against Croatia next Wednesday will guarantee England’s place in the championships.
