Bondelaget (the farmer’s union) and the state are still on opposite sides of the furrow.

The farmers have demanded increased wages and subsidies totaling 1.9 billion kroner, and the state originally offered 750 million.

Yesterday’s increase of 200 million is still being considered by the union with an answer expected today.

“There’s no doubt that what’s on the table now is a challenging starting point for further negotiations. It’s an unbelievably difficult choice,” Bondelaget’s Chairman, Nils T. Bjørke tells Nationen.

Time is running out. If no agreement is reached the country faces the threat of a national farmer’s strike, and the matter will end up in Parliament.

But the government has the majority, which gives it the upper hand. Historically, the farmers have been overruled.
