Tonje Brenna (24) is General Secretary of the Labour Party's Youth Movement (AUF).Breivik sat shaking his head in disagreement as Brenna told the court of how he had laughed and whooped while killing 69 people on the island of Utøya.

Brenna said she thought at first that the gunshots were fireworks. She ran towards the sound and saw two people shot in front of her.

“I thought at first they had had an electric shock or something, but as I carried on running I understood the combination of the sound and them falling.”

She ran on and until she found a group of people, jostling and bumping into each other. Some were severely injured, and she and several others tried to calm the panic.

They organised a queueing system and got to the edge of a cliff.

“People were sliding down the cliff, and there was someone at the bottom pushing them on to the ledge. I got down there together with one girl and we lay down quickly. She was cold and as white as chalk, and was breathing unevenly. Suddenly a person landed beside us. I could see they were dead...”

After a while, Breivik appeared and began shooting down the cliff edge at the people on the ledge. All the while there were screams and cries for help.

“I don't know whether it was the first or the last time he was there and shot at us, but I am sure that I heard shouts or expressions of satisfaction as he was shooting.”

“What did it sound like?” asked the prosecutor.

“If I was going to spell it, it would be 'W-O-H-U'. Clearly shouts of joy.”

At this point, Breivik shook his head disagreement.

Brenna was later asked whether Breivik's behaviour in court matched his behaviour on the island.

“He was the one in complete control of the situation on 22nd July, but here he seems passive. Beyond that, it's hard for me to have an opinion.

As Brenna concluded her testimony, Brevik protested that he was being silenced:

“I wanted to ask Brenna many questions about AUF's ideological position, but it's been made impossible due to political correctness,” he declared, asking if he could pose them if he dismissed his defence counsels.

Brynjar Meling, one of the team of lawyers for the aggrieved parties, told NRK that accused persons have asked witnesses questions before.

"What is more special is that he asks what happens if he fires his defence counsels. This suggests that it may be difficult to defend him."
