Foreign workers over-qualified

More than a quarter of foreign workers are over qualified for their jobs compared with just over ten percent of Norwegians, according to a new poll.

University of Bergen Professor Gro Mjeldheim Sandal feels that this could be immigrant workers being victims of discrimination.

Calling it “a pattern”, she says, “Nevertheless, other factors may play a role. When talking about being over qualified it is freqently in relation to formal qualifications.”

“The employer is often concerned with competence in a wider sense, such as opportunities for networking,” she tells Aftenposten.

Ms Sandal also believes that employers may not know what the equivalent Norwegian qualifications are for degrees and diplomas workers have gained in their own country.

“This uncertainty can be reflected in cases where jobseekers with a non-Norwegian name are not invited for an interview, even though their formal qualifications are flawless.”

The survey shows 26% of foreign workers are overqualified, whereas ‘just’ 11% of Norwegians fall into the same category.
