Foreigners lose out on Norwegian jobs

Updated: Foreign workers are being bypassed on the job market despite Norway’s renewed boom.



Norwegian firms are having to look abroad to find qualified staff, but long-term unemployment is highest amongst foreigners, according to the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).

“The most concrete result was that two electricians were given a job, with contract signings for five more,” Hege Moberg, team manager for NAV’s Sør-Rogaland employment section, reports Stavanger Aftenblad following yesterday’s job fair in Sandnes.

Norwegian businesses have traditionally shied away from employing people with darker skin. Many companies also deliberately ignore anti-discrimination legislation, blaming cultural differences.

Ms Moberg tells The Foreigner “businesses hired many foreigners when times were good the last time around based on need, but without checking their qualifications.”

“Like some long-term unemployed Norwegians, some foreigners from various countries tend not to be specialised in a particular field and don’t have a long education.”

Eastern Europeans are particularly likely to be passed over in favour of foreigners from other countries because they do not tend to speak good Norwegian or English, according to her.

“Their Norwegian doesn’t have to be perfect, but they have to be able to understand and make themselves understood.”

Nevertheless, Hege Moberg says NAV has “very good results getting immigrants employed because they have to follow an introduction course on Norwegian language and society.”

“As for some other groups of foreigners, they too can get a job if they speak good English, though this may be difficult.”
