Things are heating up again over oil exploration outside Lofoten, Vesterålen, and Senja in Northern Norway. There’s still political disagreement, and the Prime Minister is getting a scientific report delivered to him today about the viability of opening the areas up.

Boiling oil

Whilst Labour (Ap) and the Socialist Left (SV), two of the red-green coalition Parties, are arguing about it, an ex Labour minister suggests settling the dispute by putting the opponent over the barrel, according to VG.

Odd Eriksen, former Labour Trade and Industry Minister, says there are no official documents showing that work on exploring the viability of future oil-recovery in Nordland VI, VII, and Troms II should be stopped.

“We expect the government to proceed with an impact assessment that shows opening for oil exploration should be possible. Local opinion polls show there’s general agreement the assessment should be carried out. Nordland needs this, and we can’t accept that the potential isn’t explored,” he told the paper.

Later on yesterday, Eriksen said VG’s misquoted him about wishing to put pressure on SV, and has never made any statement supporting the paper’s claims.

“I find cause to emphasise that Finnmark County Council stands united behind the government’s project regarding the question of petroleum activity in the North,” he says in a press release.

Fishing for excuses?

VG claims several other top Labour politicians are weighing up whether a possible oil boom in the North should be scrapped in favour of continuing cooperation with SV.

SV and environmental groups argue the oil industry would have major effects on stocks of cod and bird wildlife.

“We can’t sit and watch the entire industrial development up here going down the pipes just because a few are concerned with conservation,” says Pia Svensgaard, Labour’s head county councillor in Troms.

All’s well that ends well?

Today will be an interesting one for Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Researchers present their findings about the oil industry’s possible environmental impact on the area and the viability of exploring for oil.

The report is expected to be so extensive, that it will be possible to find details supporting arguments on both sides.

The question remains as to whether the tri-party red-green coalition will continue to float or disappear down hole.
