Ex Norway origin and other passengers travelling on Lufthansa’s network are in for a day of disruption after the airline axed most of its 1,700 departures.

Nearly all of its European and domestic flights within Germany are cancelled. Just 20 of its planned 1,650 departures are running.

In a statement on its website, the carrier says “only a select few” of its short-haul flights will operate. Long-haul routes are subject to “massive flight cancellations and delays”.

“Of the 50 planned flights in Frankfurt, only six will operate; in Munich, of the 17 planned flights, only three will operate; whereas, in Dusseldorf all three long-haul flights are scheduled to operate as planned,” the airline states.

Low-cost and Middle Eastern airlines are giving Lufthansa and other German carriers increased competition, meaning they need to cut costs and extend roster hours.

On Friday, Lufthansa turned down demands for a 5.6 per cent pay increase over 12 months by unions.

In turn, German services sector union ver.di, which is leading the current strike, has rejected the airline’s offer of a 0.4 to 0.6 per cent wage rise over a year.

Norwegian airports Lufthansa operates flights from are Ålesund, Bergen, Haugesund, Oslo, Stavanger, Tromsø, and Trondheim. Departures operated by company Germanwings are unaffected.

An overview of affected flights can be found here. Passengers are advised to check their flight status prior to leaving for the airport. Refunds/re-bookings for cancelled flights will apply to tickets issued before 20 April, says Lufthansa.
