The second edition of chess tournament Norway Chess 2014 starts in western Norway’s Stavanger, Monday.



Known as one of the world’s strongest chess tournaments, it has some of the best players in the world.

It includes the top four in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) rankings.

World champion Magnus Carlsen has been dubbed as a “tournament favourite” according to organisers.

Last year’s winner Sergey Karjakin will also be in attendance to defend his title.

The tournament, which had been in the works from 2011, began as a world event last year.                    

Eight of the world’s topmost players competed for the first time since the Wijk aan Zee Tournament in Holland in 2001.

The first meet of Norway Chess 2014 is a Blitz round. It takes place as a closed event at Flor & Fjære today at 5pm.

All subsequent rounds in the rest of the tournament start at 3:30pm except for the last, Round 9, which commences at 2:30pm.

The daily programme between 3rd and 13th June is as follows:

  • 1st round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • 2nd round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • 3rd round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • School tournament: Vitenfabrikken, Sandnes.
  • 4th round: Vågen Upper Secondary School, Sandnes.
  • 5th round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • 6th round: Aarbakke factory hall, Bryne.
  • 7th round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • Celebrity tournament: Hall Toll, Stavanger.
  • 8th round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.
  • 9th round: Hotel Scandic, Forus.

August will see the World Chess Olympiad in Norway.
