More route-cuts planned by SAS. After having already decided to cut 13 other routes in Norway, SAS is now dumping a further seven. SAS wishes to save 2.7 billion kroner in order to spare both their domestic and major European cities’ route network from being affected. Earlier in the winter, a decision was taken to cut 13 destinations as part of their cost-cutting package called “Core SAS”. Now they say they are going to cut a further seven. “We are cutting some routes that are not economically-viable in the present economic climate. It’s the holiday routes that are suffering, because people are travelling slightly less than before” Thomas Midteide, director of communications, told The Foreigner.

European economy routes affected

SAS wishes to save 2.7 billion kroner in order to spare both their domestic and major European cities’ route network from being affected. Earlier in the winter, a decision was taken to cut 13 destinations as part of their cost-cutting package called “Core SAS”. Now they say they are going to cut a further seven.

“We are cutting some routes that are not economically-viable in the present economic climate. It’s the holiday routes that are suffering, because people are travelling slightly less than before” Thomas Midteide, director of communications, told The Foreigner.

“We are also cutting them because in the next few years we wish to focus mostly on business-travel”, he went on to say.

The “casualty” list

Most of these routes will be flown up until their next winter programme starts in the autumn:

Palma de Mallorca
Venice
Cagliari
Palermo
Malaga
Madrid
Warsaw

Competition

But according to aftenposten.no, Midteide doesn’t fear that their decision will pave the way for the competition.

“Of course it’s possible that others will start where we have left off…but it’s not profitable for us to fly these routes in today’s market, and that’s why we are cutting them for now”, he told them.

SAS has already cut London City, Naples, Ibiza, Lisbon, Seville, Tenerife, Funchal, Malta, Bilbao, Chania, Athens, Lyon, and Valencia.
