Norwegian police today confirmed that the prime suspect in the murder of a 35-year-old Fredrikstad woman was the woman’s 50-year-old partner.

Officers received information on Sunday night that the woman was being held against her will in the apartment she shared with her partner in the eastern Norway town.

The woman was mortally injured by the time the patrol reached her home, according to Aftenposten.

She died shortly after arrival at Østfold hospital in Fredrikstad despite police and ambulance staff efforts to save her life.

The suspect was reported to have left the scene in a car, and later that night was arrested in Sarpsborg. He is now indicted for murder and undergoing psychiatric evaluation.

“Police can confirm that the deceased, a 35-year-old woman, and the 50-year-old man in custody were cohabiting,” announced police prosecutor Nanna Aaby in a press release, Monday. “Police findings so far in this case indicate that the police have arrested the actual offender.”

“I didn’t hear anything last night”, a neighbour told Aftenposten, “neither did another neighbour. It wasn’t till this morning we heard that something had happened in the house next door.”

The suspect is reportedly known to local police, and owns several rental properties in the Fredrikstad area.

Police are appealing to witnesses to come forward. “We continue to investigate rigorously, and there is still a lot to do before we fully understand the order of events in this case,” said police prosecutor Nanna Aaby.
