The Foreigner New NATO SG gears up for tasks ahead. Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg arrived in Brussels to begin his new position of Secretary General of NATO. His first duty, Tuesday, is to lead a meeting of the North Atlantic Council which consists of representatives from all 28 countries. Mr Stoltenberg told the press that he is aware of the challenges currently facing the west and that his time in politics has prepared him for the job.

New NATO SG gears up for tasks ahead

Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg arrived in Brussels to begin his new position of Secretary General of NATO.



His first duty, Tuesday, is to lead a meeting of the North Atlantic Council which consists of representatives from all 28 countries.

Mr Stoltenberg told the press that he is aware of the challenges currently facing the west and that his time in politics has prepared him for the job.

“There isn’t one specific area I'm extra worried about, but I know that there will be surprises in this type of job, like in political work in Norway. One must be prepared for major and minor crises. Having preparedness to deal with the unexpected is part of the job of Secretary General,” Aftenposten quoted his as saying.

The former Norwegian Prime Minister has said he will bring his own style of leadership to the position and will work closely with his colleagues.

“I’m concerned with being a leader in NATO that am present for all employees and build a team with them. They are talented and are doing a great job. I’m also keen to have dialogue with all member states and to have a close communication with them”.

Outgoing NATO Secretary General, Denmark’s Anders Fogh Rasmussen commented on Mr Stoltenberg assuming Office.

“As I hand over to Jens Stoltenberg and midnight, I know I leave a strong NATO in strong hands,” Mr Rasmussen posted on his Twitter account.
