The Norwegian Embassy in Tehran has been closed amongst concerns for security, Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials confirm.

“We made the decision following a security assessment after yesterday’s attack on the British Embassy,” spokesperson Hilde Steinfeld tells The Foreigner.

The assault happened following violent demonstrations, with assailants breaking in to the main embassy compound, damaging buildings, burning the Union Jack and setting fire to a least one vehicle. The Queen's portrait was also smashed.

UK paper The Telegraph reports riot police did nothing to stop the violence, with protestors chanting "death to England." Some staff are being withdrawn from Iran.

Jonas Gahr Støre, Norway’s Foreign Minister, condemned the assault, declaring it “completely unacceptable.”

As yet, Norwegian officials have not been evacuated from Tehran for the time being. Ms Steinfeld says closing their embassy “was a precautionary measure.”
