Norwegian authorities oppose trans fats that can be found in biscuits, cookies, margarine, and cakes and other items, imposing a two-percent limit.



Soups and sauces in powdered form, with nearly 40 grams of trans fats per 100 grams of fat, are known to be the worst when it comes to containing these dangerous fats.

Trans fats are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and are linked to the development of type-2 diabetes. These are also known to raise levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL), and lower the “good” cholesterol (HDL).

Norway’s FSA (Food Safety Authority) has been concerned about the negative health effects of trans fats for years.

Officials are now acting, meaning potentially fatal food items will be disappearing from Norwegian supermarket shelves in times to come. New regulations came into force about eight weeks ago.

Senior adviser Nina Lødrup states Norwegian authorities have nearly eliminated all industrially produced trans fat in Norwegian produced foods, Aftenposten reported her as saying.

Moreover, in a ‘Brief Statement of Grounds’ that justifies these measures from last year, the FSA mentioned that, “Many scientific studies have documented that the consumption of trans fatty acids has an adverse effect on blood lipids and cholesterol which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Officials list heart attacks (myocardial infarction) continuing to be one of the dominant causes of death in the Norwegian population.

“Any reduction of this risk would be beneficial for the public health. Setting up a legal limit for the content of transfatty acids in foodstuffs is a measure that may contribute to reducing the intake of such acids and thus lead to a reduction in the intake of these acids in the population,” they stated.

The new ban will also apply to imported foods.
