Norway Hurtigruten leaks ‘a mystery’ / News / The Foreigner

Norway Hurtigruten leaks ‘a mystery’. As the salvage operation of MS ‘Nordlys’ enters its final phases, there are still no clues as to when the leaks occurred. Police are not entirely convinced an explosion caused the blaze which happened so quickly, it caught the crew off-guard, despite their weekly emergency drill training. CEO Olav Fjell also believes the leak is unconnected to it. “It’s too early to say whether the leak occurred as a result of the fire or whether something happened when the ship docked. However, the water came in via a leak just behind the stabilizer fin. The damage has nothing to do with the fire,” he told NRK.

Rescue crews are confident the ship has regained stability. ‘Nordlys’ is being deliberately held at a 7-8 degree list because there is still water onboard, but there are still doubts all the leaks have been plugged.

After going aboard for the first time since Thursday’s accident, Mr Fjell says in a press release that, “seeing the inside made a strong impression on me. It shows signs of having been abandoned quickly, and things were overturned following the considerable list.” He was accompanied by police and the Captain.

Meanwhile, passengers are still without most of their possessions left behind following the evacuation in Ålesund.

Communications Director Ragnar Norum tells The Foreigner, “Police and crew are going to carry these out later and bring their personal belongings to the Rica Park Hotel, when they will be able to collect them by cabin number.”

The vessel is also carrying approximately 20 cars belonging to Norwegians travelling between ports as a normal part of domestic transport. These are on a separate deck above the two flood-damaged cargo holds, and amazingly, are still secured and intact “apart from a few hit by some parts from the ship,” Mr Norum says.

Crime scene technicians are to complete their investigations following the deaths of two crew, and both bodies will be autopsied prior to the funerals late next week. Conditions to the two seriously injured crewmembers in Bergen remain unchanged.

It is expected Nordlys’ will be towed to nearby Fiskerstrand shipyard on Monday and put in dry-dock.
