The work on this gas-powered Norway-Denmark ferry features 50 musicians representing different styles of music, from Classical to current-day.

Black Metal musician Varg Vikernes has spent 16 years in prison for murder and several church burnings in Norway.

Managing Director of the company Ingvald Fardal says Vikernes appearing on the piece without Fjordline having noticed this was unintentional.

“What this person has done is not consistent with our values, even though it is in the past,” Mr Fardal tells NRK about why the removing was sanctioned.

French police recently arrested Vikernes on suspicion of planning terror attacks. Authorities subsequently ordered his release.

“Straightforward”

Other musicians featured on the collage include Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and The Beatles. Fjord Line’s Mr Fardal explains to The Foreigner “the job was originally commissioned through an arts buyer who subsequently found an artist.”

“The artist then found relevant pictures, but not featuring the names. One of our guests noticed that the collage had an old picture of Vikernes on it,” he says.

Fjordline’s move removing the photo from the collage was not met with resistance from artist Karl Hansen.

“He agreed it would be fairly simple to make the change,” comments Mr Fardal.

Artist Karl Hansen also remarks to NRK that “it [using Vikernes’ photo] is not meant as a provocation in the slightest.”

“This is meant to be a family restaurant. We placed a butterfly over the nipple to Amy Winehouse so as not to be an affront to people.”

A grey area

Others have been critical of the decision, however.

Ingeborg Kvame from Bildende Kunstneres Forening Rogaland, a visual arts association based in southern Norway’s Stavanger, tells The Foreigner that “censuring an artwork is not reasonable in principle.”

“However, it’s up to the artist himself whether he feels making an alteration to the work is ok.”

Which musician will replace the Vikernes’ photo is still undecided, according to Fjordline’s Ingval Fardal.

“We’ve had many customers emailing us suggestions, though, and expect the decision-making process to take a week,” Mr Fardal concludes.
