Marit ‘Iron Lady’ Bjørgen was cool under cross-country pressure and gets Norway’s gold tally up-and-running.

Norway’s campaign in Sochi Winter Olympic Games has started well as Marit Bjørgen gets gold in the 15km Cross Country Ladies’ Skiathlon after Ståle Sandbech’s silver.

The 33-year-old from Trondheim, known to many of her fans as the “Iron Lady” of cross-country skiing, fended off the challenge from Swedish Charlotte Kalla, who finished just 1.8 seconds behind.

Fellow Norwegian, Heidi Weng, collected bronze.

This is Bjørgen’s fourth Olympic gold, having won three in the previous Winter Olympics in Vancouver, making her one of the most successful Olympian of all time. Today’s medal is her first 15km gold, though.

A pleased Bjørgen said after her victory that “one gold was my goal, so now I can relax a little bit. I can enjoy the rest of the Games.”

“I knew Charlotte would be strong in the sprint and she's good at the climbs, but I thought I would have a chance if I could follow her.”

Norway collected their first silver of the Games, Saturday, in the Olympic Snowboard Men’s Slopestyle. Ståle Sandbech could not see of the US’ Sage Kotsenburg, though, who won gold. Canada’s Maxence Parrot came third.
