Lars Rune Ringvik, prosecutor for Gudbrandsdal District Police, has revealed to NRK that the assaults allegedly took place at some stage between 2009 and 2011.

The 15-year-old’s parents reported the matter on Sunday. According to a council press statement, the Mayor does not recognise the allegations.

His defence lawyer, Mette Yvonne Larsen, tells NTB, however, “He wants to avoid speculations, amongst other things, and [chooses] to confirm in public what many already know. He also believes he is innocent, and therefore finds coming forward unproblematic.”

NRK reports Labour’s Party Secretary Raymond Johansen rang Mr Øygard after receiving the news last Tuesday.

“I contacted him by phone personally, and he was advised to lay himself off.”

Mr Øygard followed the recommendation, and is also now on sick leave from his post. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg calls the accusation and indictment “serious”.

Up to 40 witnesses could be questioned in connection with the case.
