Majoran Vivekananthan’s comments suggesting Rune Øygard might not have committed sexual assault if he or the girl had been Muslim slammed.

Former Vågå Mayor Rune Øygard was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment for repeated sexual assaults on a teenage girl.

He was also ordered to pay the victim NOK 120,000 in damages (about USD 20.4k/EUR 15.7k/GBP 13.4k).

In his weekend op-ed, editor of Utrop Mr Vivekanathan wrote “Sexual abuse, assault and rape can take place regardless of religion, race and ethnicity.”

“[Mr] Øygard being a Muslim [or not] would perhaps not have mattered; a scumbag is a scumbag, regardless of religion, race and ethnicity. But the assault would probably not have taken place had the family or the community been of the Islamic faith.”

Further down in his op-ed, Mr Vivekanathan raised the point that it is noticeable that parents in Norway protect their children to increasingly lesser degrees.

He cites gender equality views as one possible reason, saying that this results in girls sometimes being left to themself.

“I have often wondered about Norwegian parents sending their female children to events where adult strangers are present and alcohol is being imbibed.”

Liberal Party (V) politician Abid Raja of Pakistani descent called Utrop editor Majoran Vivekananthan’s remarks “completely insensitive”.

“There is after all a victim and parents in the picture. Applying some of these feelings of guilt and a feeling that they are responsible for what has happened is disrespectful," he told NRK.

The MP added that sexual assault also happens in every religious community, including the Muslim one, and that parents in Norway should be able to send their children to activities unsupervised without having to be concerned about them.

“We must (also) be beware of a having a debate in which one argues that Christians are better than Muslims, Muslims better than humanists and humanists better than Christians. Utrop’s editor shouldn’t be stoking the fire here,” declared Mr Raja.

Socialist Left Youth Party (SU) leader Andreas Halse believes Majoran Vivekananthan should resign from his position after making such remarks, for the sake of Utrop’s credibility.

“I’m very pro to having a multicultural magazine in Norway, and I think it helps to enrich the public debate. But Mr Vivekananthan destroys both his own and the magazine's credibility with this [op-ed],” he concluded.
