Recent months’ increase in Mycoplasma Pneumonia has stocks of the antibiotics, reports say.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health first warned of the rise at the beginning of December last year. Reported incidents reached 25 percent in southern and western parts of the country.

Erythromycin has been prescribed for those suffering with the illness but pharmacies have now run out of this drug.

“We are concerned about the situation. Currently, we have replacement drugs, but we fear that they will run out too,” the Norwegian Medicines Agency Steinar Madsen told NRK.

Mycoplasma Pneumonia symptoms include muscle pains, sore throat and a dry cough. It usually takes 3-4 weeks to recover.

There are now plans to import the drugs from abroad to deal with the shortage, but stocks are not expected until March or April.
