Norway positive to Putin’s Moscow Arctic Forum message. This week’s meeting between countries with interests in the Arctic has ended with assurances by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin that there will be no disagreements over the region. Norway says it is determined to solve things peacefully. “The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue” is an international discussion forum where Norway, Canada, the USA, Denmark and Russia can cooperate towards reaching agreements regarding their territorial claims in the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic region is gradually increasing in importance with the ice meltdown and the five countries want to delimitate their areas of jurisdiction, implicitly gaining the right to explore the natural resources lying within their waters.

International rumpus

“The Arctic: Territory of Dialogue” is an international discussion forum where Norway, Canada, the USA, Denmark and Russia can cooperate towards reaching agreements regarding their territorial claims in the Arctic Ocean.

The Arctic region is gradually increasing in importance with the ice meltdown and the five countries want to delimitate their areas of jurisdiction, implicitly gaining the right to explore the natural resources lying within their waters.

Although the idea of the forum is to promote dialogue, sources from Kremlin tell the BBC that Russia is determined to defend its national interests. Canada, the US, Denmark, and Norway have already laid claim to some of the region’s territory.

However, none of the involved parties desires to use arbitrary means of action to reach their goals.

“We assume that there are currently no Arctic issues requiring the use of force and the regional states are able to assert their sovereign rights without help from the military-political blocs,” said Prime Minister Putin earlier this month in an official press release.

Last week, Norway and Russia made a first reconciliation step by signing an agreement concerning their territorial differences in the Arctic and the Barents Sea, thus ending a 40 year-old conflict.

Norway also urged Canada to solve their issues with the Arctic states and even gave them tips on how they need to negotiate with Russia.

Karsten Klepsvik, Norway’s Polar Affairs Advisor/Ambassador, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD), tells The Foreigner Norway is assured and confident and satisfied that matters can be solved in a peaceful and cooperative manner.

“The main message has been that there are a lot of challenges in the Arctic, but we are fully prepared to meet them. Prime Minister Putin gave a very constructive speech where he approach the issue, and underlined Russia will follow the [UN’s Convention on] the Law of the Sea,” he says by phone from Moscow.
