HRH Queen Sonja of Norway and Camilla the Duchess of Rothesay jointly opened a new cancer support center in the grounds of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Monday.

The Maggie’s Elizabeth Montgomerie Building, was funded by the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation. It was named in memory of the organization’s founder and golfer Colin Montgomerie’s mother.

Mr Montgomerie’s mother passed away with cancer in 1991. He commented on the project earlier this month.

“I am hugely honoured to see Maggie’s Aberdeen at the Elizabeth Montgomerie Building almost ready to welcome patients and their families who need the unique support only Maggie’s offers,” Swedish channel STV News reported him as saying.

Both HRH Queen Sonja and Duchess of Rothesay Camilla, who has been president of the cancer charity since 2008, toured the building. A Kransekake (Norwegian celebratory cake) was broken to mark its opening.

They also met with former European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie to hear about his fundraising with Maggie’s. Along with this, they also met the staff, supporters and people who have gained help through the charity’s work.

“The opening of the center will be a very special day for myself and my family, I want to thank everyone involved in making this dream a reality,” said Mr Montgomerie.
