Norway royals mark their 80 birthdays. The two-day celebration kicked off on Tuesday, with guests arriving from all over Europe. King Harald V turned 80 in February and Queen Sonja will be 80 in July. The royal couple celebrated their birthdays together, as they have done several times over the years. Several thousand-people gathered around the Palace Square outside the Royal Norwegian Palace in Oslo to watch the entertainment.

Norway royals mark their 80 birthdays

The two-day celebration kicked off on Tuesday, with guests arriving from all over Europe.

King Harald V turned 80 in February and Queen Sonja will be 80 in July. The royal couple celebrated their birthdays together, as they have done several times over the years.

Several thousand-people gathered around the Palace Square outside the Royal Norwegian Palace in Oslo to watch the entertainment.

Many of the royals went out on the balcony to look at the gathering crowds, who sang the birthday song.

Government and government officials arrived at the palace early on Tuesday from 11:00am to congratulate the royal couple. HM King Harald and the Queen welcomed guests in the Mirror Hall at the palace.

Gifts were presented throughout the day, including one from President of the Parliament Olemic Thommessen.

Around 40 royals attended Tuesday night’s a gala dinner held at the Royal Palace.

The President of Iceland, Gudni Johannesson, Finland’s President Sauli Väinämö Niinistö, and Princess Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, were also among those who arrived to celebrate the Royal Birthday.

Denmark’s Royal Family arrived on their yacht, Dannebrog. Dannebrog, which anchored under the ancient Akershus Fortress.

Wednesday saw lunch aboard the Norwegian royal ship. Royal guests were taken on a mini cruise in the Oslo Fjord.

And 350 guests attended a dinner at the Norwegian Opera that evening, with an official gift given by and from the Norwegian government

As expected, security was on alert during the festivities, with many roads in the centre of Oslo closed.

Police cars and patrols were on every driveway leading towards the Palace square.
