Norway's Conservatives: Brief pre-election overview. The Conservative Party (H) have focused on the idea of ‘society with opportunities for all’. Diversity is a positive force for change, knowledge is a precondition for solving the challenges Norway faces, creating value is valuable in itself and dispersion of power makes society stronger, according to them. In education, the Party wants to strengthen the quality of pre-school by training more teachers, and creating a supervisory authority. They also want to introduce learning objectives for all years of schooling and prioritise pupils’ reading and arithmetic abilities.

Moreover, the Conservatives also believe that higher salaries and flexible working hours will retain and help to recruit more teachers.

Infrastructure needs to ensure the building and maintaining of roads and railways is quicker, and the Party want to create new funding and development models to ensure that this happens, they say.

Listed below are four issues picked out the Conservatives regard as important.

Immigration

Integration:

  • To introduce language and knowledge testing for everyone applying for citizenship.
  • To give language training to children with poor Norwegian skills before they start school.
  • To strengthen the language training offered to women from minority backgrounds.
  • Cooperate with immigrant organisations and cultural and religious communities to ensure that individual groups are not excluded.

Asylum:

  • Reduce the time needed to process applications and to introduce deadlines.
  • Return those who are not granted asylum and those staying illegally in Norway quickly back to their country of origin.
  • To establish reception centres in all parts of the country.

The Environment

  • Participate in the further development of the EU Emissions Trading System and work towards an ambitious plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Europe.
  • Support the transition to zero- and low-emission cars by lowering road tax for these types of vehicles.
  • Polluters must pay: Reform the system of environmental taxes and duties.

Transport

  • Establish a maintenance fund and use the returns to upgrade roads and railways.
  • Ensure smarter and more efficient traffic flows by strengthening investment in Intelligent Transport Systems.
  • Increase investment in the electrification of railway lines that are currently operated by diesel.

Taxation

  • Pursue a policy that ensures it is worthwhile to work.
  • Reduce and eventually abolish the wealth tax.
  • Abolish inheritance tax.
  • Reduce tax on low and regular incomes.
  • Ensure fairer taxation of pensioners.
