“I received the news of Grete Waitz’ death with sadness, and my sympathies go to her family,” said Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen, Minister of Health and Care Services, in a press statement.

Mrs Waitz, Norway’s pioneering champion of female long-distance running, was the only athlete to have nine victories in the New York Marathon. She also won the London Marathon twice.

Her Norwegian records of 4:00,55 for 1500 metres at the 1978 European Athletics Championships in Prague, four-minute-mile time of 4:26,90 at Gateshead the same year, and 3000 metres in a time of time of 8:31,75 at the 1979 Oslo Bislett Games remain unbeaten.

She lost her six-year battle against cancer today, passing away peacefully at Ullevål University Hospital with husband Jack at her side.

“She was an active supporter in the fight against cancer, where she was particularly concerned with prevention and physical activity as part of this. Grete Waitz has been a major motivator and spokesperson for public health efforts for a whole generation, especially women,” the minister said.
