Norwegian Eurovision line-up: Sold out, or a sell-out?. Programme leader’s contestant choices spark negative reactions. The number of entries to this year’s Norwegian qualifiers (Melodi Grand Prix/MGP) for the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest has exploded since Alexander Rybak walked away with a convincing victory last year. But amidst the enthusiasm come allegations of favouritism. Back-scratchers “If you look at the list with this year’s contestants, together with the previous two, you’d have to be deaf and blind not to be able to see that they’re all people closely connected to Per Sundnes,” composer and journalist, Svein Strugstad, tells VG, who also write that Sundnes has picked 19 of this year’s 21 artists.

The number of entries to this year’s Norwegian qualifiers (Melodi Grand Prix/MGP) for the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest has exploded since Alexander Rybak walked away with a convincing victory last year. But amidst the enthusiasm come allegations of favouritism.

Back-scratchers

“If you look at the list with this year’s contestants, together with the previous two, you’d have to be deaf and blind not to be able to see that they’re all people closely connected to Per Sundnes,” composer and journalist, Svein Strugstad, tells VG, who also write that Sundnes has picked 19 of this year’s 21 artists.

Strugstad also criticises to the rest of the jury, consisting of two representatives from Universal Music, four from Dinamo Story – the production company – and three NRK employees.

“It’s extremely worrying (that two of the jury members are from Universal), especially when several of this year’s artists have signed with Universal, companies associated with them, or those due to sign if they do well in the contest. This gives Universal a very peculiar dual role.

“Those of us who are geographically removed from the competition and the environment round NRK, Sundnes, and Universal in Oslo feel that we just don’t measure up to their judgement because we’re not part of the scene.”

Take-off

Meanwhile, tonight’s first round of semi-finals in Ørland municipality in Sør-Trøndelag – with its 5,000 inhabitants – is sold out, and is the smallest place in Norway to have arranged an MGP bout ever.

It’s also one of the Norwegian air force’s northerly bases; something that has come in useful when it comes to housing some 2,500 ticket-holders and 50 international and national members of the press – in addition to the contestants – as the air force has donated a hanger.

The event will be hard to miss. Aftenposten reports that billboards have been set up in the centre of town, with larger than life-sized pictures of Sundnes, amongst other things.

An expensive flop?

But whatever the outcome of the “Sundnesgate” is, and however both tonight’s round and the finals of the Eurovision go, may not matter in the end. Norway is the country that has got the most big, fat zeros in Eurovision’s history.
