Cebu City’s public prosecutors have dashed Sven-Erik Berger and fiancée Karen Castro Esdrelon’s hopes of release from jail today.

The couple stand accused of kidnapping and murdering six-year-old Ellah Joy Pique almost two weeks ago and have been sitting in police custody for nine days.

Mr Berger and Ms Esdrelon have repeatedly claimed they are innocent, as they were nowhere near the scene at the time of her disappearance.

Footage from hotel security cameras, excerpts of which have been seen by both National Bureau of Investigation officials and local paper The Cebu Daily News, shows them checking in at the time, giving them what is believed to be a cast-iron alibi.

Receipts from a Norwegian language school and nearby restaurant also corroborate their story.

Nevertheless, prosecutors supported demands from National police for an extension of custody after they claimed they needed time to prepare their documents.

The couple tell NRK they are very disappointed with the decision, but are confident they will be able to endure another two days.
