Eight Norwegian soldiers have been wounded, one of them critically, in an attack by a large group of rebels in Afghanistan.

The soldiers came under fire whilst on a mission to talk to Afghan leaders and security forces in Ghowrmach in the north, when resistance fighters opened fire with rocket grenades and handheld weapons.

Another soldier was also seriously wounded in the battle, and both were flown by helicopter to the German hospital at Camp Marmal in Mazar-e Sharif.

“There’s a good chance of stabilising his condition, whilst the situation for the second is serious but stable,” John Espen Lien, head of communications at the Military’s operational headquarters (FOH) tells NRK.

The other six soldiers sustained lighter injuries.
