Norwegian Mayor: ‘We built Holmenkollen for you’. OSLO: Thousands of people gathered in the University Square to see the opening of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Karl Johans Gate and the University Square seemed to be too small for all those who of all ages, who came from far and wide to witness the fifth World Championship hosted by Norway. More than 1,500 children waving flags from different countries opened the ceremony from the Royal Palace, and went down to University Square led by the King’s Guard and the Staff Band of the Norwegian Royal Forces.

OSLO: Thousands of people gathered in the University Square to see the opening of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.

Karl Johans Gate and the University Square seemed to be too small for all those who of all ages, who came from far and wide to witness the fifth World Championship hosted by Norway.

More than 1,500 children waving flags from different countries opened the ceremony from the Royal Palace, and went down to University Square led by the King’s Guard and the Staff Band of the Norwegian Royal Forces.

“It is for you we built Holmenkollen, and for you we have organized the World Championships,” Fabian Stang, the mayor of Oslo , said during the opening ceremony.

FIS president Gian Franco Kasper handed over the official FIS international flag to the president of the Organising Committee of the FIS Nordic Wold Ski Championship, Svein Aaser, during the festivities.

The ceremony ended with Maria Haukaas Mittet, who sang the World Cup song, “Glorious”.

Tomorrow sees the Ladies and Men’s Individual Sprint Free finals, the first two of the competition.
