These travelers have been involved in acts that range from plain embarrassing to life-threatening.

Norwegians earned their third place following the episode of the drunken 36-year-old man who fell asleep on the baggage belt at Rome's Fiumicino airport in July last year.

He was spotted with his backpack and beer in hand and was taking a flight back to Oslo.

The drunken Norwegian tucked himself into fetal position on the self-drop baggage belt after check-in.

He then fell asleep, passing through the X-ray machine before airport staff discovered him and called the police.

Other badly-behaved (or hapless) contenders on the list include a Chinese teenager who tagged his name on a 3,000 year old artwork in Egypt (who tops the list), and the American family that cooked themselves a rare six-legged Greek octopus for dinner (second place).

There were also incidents with some British tourists who stole a penguin, and an American man who dropped a hand-grenade (in fourth and fifth positions, respectively).

In another overview compiled by travel site Skyscanner, Norwegians were found to be the 20th-rudest –with the French on top.

Moreover, a Norwegian family returned seven days early from a two-week holiday abroad after finding the hotel they were staying at had too many foreigners.

Officials at Norway’s package holiday complaints authority turned their complaint down, finding in favor of tour operator Apollo.

A British-born academic has also stated she believes Norwegians in general should take note of their surroundings when talking.
